About Ecology Vision

OUR VISION IS CLEAR

“to enhance diversity and abundance of native plants and animals by protecting and enriching our islands ecosystems”

Values Statement: We live in a beautiful and remote island environment that unifies our resilient and diverse community. We value our natural heritage, acknowledge our history and wish to preserve our way of life, looking forward to a sustainable future so our environment, community and economy prosper.

OUR AIMS FOR THE FUTURE ARE:

  • Flourishing native species (both plants and animals)
  • Reduced predatory pest species such as rats and cats
  • Reduced invasive weeds
  • Increased revegetation, riparian planting and wetland planting
  • Healthy waterways
  • Healthy marine environment

ABOUT THE ECOLOGY VISION

The Ecology Vision was initiated by the Great Barrier Local Board with the aim of establishing a community vision for the enhancement and management of the island’s natural environment.

Over 2014 – 2016 an island wide survey and research piece was undertaken which aimed to develop a community led vision for the ecological future of the island. A key outcome of this work was that the community wanted the Ecology Vision (and any keystone projects) to incorporate Environmental, Social and Economic objectives. In 2018 funding was approved for an Ecology Vision Facilitator to assist the delivery of ecology vision community-based initiatives. Since then we have seen development of community groups, community trap libraries, community nursery and many community activities such as bird counts, beach clean ups.
